Cops and Bobbers
April 22, 2022
Grand Park in the Market Common
I's been three years since this event was last held, but what a perfect day it was!  Not only was the weather perfect, but the experience for the children and adults will make lasting memories. The children were able to bond with an officer while learning how to fish.  Fun was had by all!  Thank you to Dagwoods (400 Mr. Joe White Ave) for helping to provide lunch and to A Teacher's Touch (2610 S Kings Hwy) for providing two $25 gift cards for the Teachers.  Our MBCPAAA volunteers helped in many aspects to include monitoring the pavilion, supplying snacks and refreshments during the event, providing lunch, helping clean-up, and of course providing encouragement and praise.  Thank you to Whitney Chestnut, Cookie Graga, Glen Gunther, Renee Miller our wonderful photographer, Barbara Prescop, John Rollins, Verena Schnyder, Ron Siedlecki, and Meche Williams.
Thank You Franco Krzynowek - You Will Be Missed
Feb 18, 1928 - Apr 18, 2022
Picture
It is with a sad heart that we share news of Franco's passing.  He was a valuable and dedicated volunteer for the MBCPAAA and an ardent supporter of the MBPD.  Will will miss his friendship, quiet demeanor, and avid story telling.

It was apropos to have a Military Celebration of his life and Military Honors at Warbird Park, Farrow Parkway, Myrtle Beach.  The podium was placed where an old fighter aircraft was directly in the background.  The type of aircraft he had worked on during his 30-year Military Career in the Air Force.

You have your wings again!

April 7 - Loris 15th Circuit LEN Meeting and Traffic Safety Event - The 6 p.m. meeting was held at the Loris Police Department.  This time Glen Gunther, John Kanellos, and John Rollins were the MBCPAAA volunteers providing snacks and refreshments.  The thunderstorms held off and the traffic safety event was actually held for the first time in several years!  John Kanellos even won a t-shirt.  Woo hoo!
March 31 - Myrtle Beach 15th Circuit LEN Meeting and Traffic Safety Event - The 6 p.m. meeting was held at Logan's Restaurant in Myrtle Beach.  The MBCPAAA was represented by Cookie Graga, Susan Grose, and John Rollins.  Our volunteers were ready with snacks and cold drinks, but unfortunately rain canceled the safety event.
2022 Myrtle Beach Marathon
It was a near perfect day for the runners in the Marathon, half-marathon, and 5K.  Our wonderful volunteers arrived for the 5 a.m. briefing and steadfastly manned their posts.  A huge thank-you to Tommy Chestnut, Whitney Chestnut, Nate Davis, Mike Grehl, Glen Gunther, Mike Johnston, John Moore, John Rollins, and Jim Turnbull.  You represented our Association well! Thank You!
Thank You Cresswind Community
Jill Merhar, both a resident of the Cresswind Community and a BOD member of the Myrtle Beach Citizen Police Academy Alumni Association, presented a 2021 Certificate of Appreciation to the Cresswind Community. Thank You, Jill, for being such a good ambassador and wonderful volunteer. You organized the Cresswind Community into making a difference and "Backing the Blue." We look forward to a continuing partnership for future events.

MLK Jr Freedom Parade
January 15, 2022
It was a bit nippy this morning, but thankfully the briefing was at 8:15 a.m.  The parade began at 9 a.m. and was over by 10:45 a.m.  Thank you to our wonderful volunteers who braved the chilly weather to help our wonderful MBPD with this event. Whitney Chestnut, Nate Davis, Mike Grehl, Renee Miller, John Paulhus, Barbara Prescop, John Rollins, Ron Siedlecki, Jim Turnbull, Karen Wierzbicki

Thank you to MBCPAAA members Whitney Chestnut, Nate Davis, John Rollins, and Verena Schnyder for representing us at the Joe McGarry Memorial Remembrance ceremony held on Dec 29. Christmas Day Meals
Dec 25, 2021

Once again, our loyal ad dedicated volunteers gave up time with their own families to spend Christmas Day feeding our wonderful MBPD Law Enforcement.  Jill Merhar took the reigns for both meals with our "regular" volunteers doing their part.  Thank You, Rosealie Andersen, Dennis Brogna, Whitney Chestnut, Tim Hyman, Nate Davis, Larry Graden, Mike Grehl, John Rollins.  It was another success and you left the fridge loaded w/food for them to enjoy later!
Our wonderful business partners:
Christmas Party
for Children of Law Enforcement
Dec 18, 2021

This was the first year the MBCPAAA participated in the event.  Our theme was "It's an Animal Christmas, too."  Many of our items were donated - w/special thanks to the City of Myrtle Beach Dept. of Parks & Recreation for donating a multitude of neat gadget-type gifts.  The soft doggie animals were donated by the City of Myrtle Beach Police - Records Dept., with Jill Merhar and Barbara Prescop purchasing and donating needed items.  John Rollins dressed up as the Shark Man, Jill Merhar dressed as Puddles the Puppy, Barbara Prescop as another friendly canine, and Dennis Brogna dressed in Holiday attire.  Thanks to all volunteers for making this a memorable event for the children.
2nd Annual Jacob Hancher Memorial Scholarship Fundraiser
Myrtle Beach Gun Show, Oct 30-31
Ladsen Gun Show, Nov 27-28
Columbia Gun Show, Dec 11-12
The MBCPAAA once again volunteered to help sell raffle tickets for this great cause and to keep Jacob's name alive.  Many of our members sold tickets, with a BIG thank you to Dennis Brogna, Glen Gunther, Mike Grehl, Tim Hyman, Barbara Prescop, John Rollins, and Meche Williams.  In addition, we volunteered to help sell tickets at the Myrtle Beach Gun Show.  We were very successful thanks to Whitney Chestnut, Glen Gunther, Ron Farabell, Jill Merhar, Barbara Prescop, and John Rollins.  As a matter of fact, we were so successful that 1800BOARDUP invited us to do the same at two additional gun shows.  Thank you Whitney Chestnut, Jill Merhar, and Barbara Prescop for traveling to Ladsen and giving up a weekend to sell tickets, with Whitney Chestnut traveling to Columbia to do the same.  All in all, our Association helped to sell several hundred tickets and collected over $3000 in donations.
2021 Thanksgiving Meals
Finally, this Thanksgiving event was almost completely back to "normal."  We used our hot and cold food bars to set up the buffet-style dinner, needing to use only a couple of crock pots.  The desserts hosted a variety of goodies, many packed in zip-lock baggies for the officers to take in their vehicles.  There was a variety of cold and hot drinks to satisfy any non-alcoholic craving.  Once again, we couldn't be successful without our contributing businesses and dedicated volunteers.
Bojangles Surprise
November 14, 2021
Thank you to Graham Howe and Jill Merhar, both with the Myrtle Beach Tennis Center, and Bojangles for donating food to the MBPD. The MBCPAAA gladly delivered the food to the officers at the main PD.

 Volunteer Appreciation Dinner
November 2, 2021
Angelo's Steak & Pasta
We held a very special volunteer appreciation dinner for those that have actively volunteered over the last year.  Since the pandemic, volunteering has been rough.  Events have been canceled or greatly modified due to COVID.  Still, our Association survived on volunteer service.  This dinner was arranged with Angelo's Steak and Pasta to provide a special "Thank You."  It was an enjoyable evening for all!

Shooting Solutions
October 9, 2021

Some of our members expressed a desire to obtain their SC CWP permit.  We teamed up w/Shooting Solutions, who so graciously offered a 25% discount to our members & extended to one family member.  These are taught by former Law Enforcement and is an extremely informative class with the instruction and range requirement done on site.

Thank you to members of the MBCPAAA who volunteered at the Ofc. Jacob Hancher Memorial Dedication. Whitney Chestnut, Nate Davis, Ron Farabell, Larry Graden, Joh Rollins Leon LeClerc, Barbara Prescop, and Verena Schnyder. It was a beautiful ceremony on a picture-perfect day with the Coastal Carolina Shields providing lovely bagpipe music. SC Largest Garage Sale
September 25, 2021
The Myrtle Beach Convention Center
7 a.m.-2 p.m.
This event turned out to be our most successful fundraiser in the history of our Association.  We raised approx. $2100 in donations.  It took a heck of a lot of work collecting donations, picking-up the donations, delivering and unloading them to/at the Conventions Center, unpacking and setting up our space, selling the items, then repacking the left-overs and donating them to Goodwill.
Jill and Mark Merhar deserve a HUGE thank-you for all of their weeks of work collecting items and storing them in their garage.  Jill also sold items on Marketplace totaling approx. $700 of our total donations.
The day prior to the event, if it weren't for these guys we'd never have gotten our items to the Convention Center.  We had three pick-up sites where donations were stored.  Thank you so much to Mike Grehl and John Kanellos for being our Two Guys & a Trailer.  They did all of the pickups from the three sites.  Once at the Conventions Center, Glen Gunther joined to help Mike, John, and Barbara Prescop unload our treasures.  Tim Hyman was a lifesaver helping to organize and set-up our space (see picture below)
The day of the event, only Verena Schnyder and Barbara Prescop worked from approx. 6 a.m.-3 p.m. doing ALL of the work.
We can't express in words our appreciation to the "Fabulous Seven" for their dedication and hard work.  It would ot have been such a huge success without each and every one.

Tunnel to Tower 5K Run/Walk
Sept 4 - Valor Park
Our wonderful MBCPAAA volunteers helped motivate participants in the Tunnel to Towers 5K Run/Walk to "ensure we never forget the sacrifices of our Nation's First Responders and Military Heroes." At the final 1/2 mile mark, we were honored to hold signs depicting some of the fallen 9/11 heroes as we chanted "USA" and other encouraging words. We were amazed at the number of people who personally knew some of the heroes whose images we were holding. We are also proud of our own member, the Chief of the Myrtle Beach Airport Fire Department, Tim Hyman, for participating in almost full gear. A beautiful event on a picture-perfect day.
Law Enforcement Network (LEN)
Hands Across the Border
15th Judicial Circuit
August 29 - NC/SC Border
This is probably the LEN Highlight of each year.  After the meeting and briefing, everyone travels to the NC/SC border on Route 17 in a cooperative effort at a traffic safety stop. It's always a great event.  NC brings their mobile testing "Bus" which includes a magistrate office.  Quite impressive.  Thank you to MBCPAAA volunteers Mike Grehl, Glen Gunther, and John Rollins for providing snacks and cold drinks for these hardworking heroes in blue.

June 29 - North Myrtle Beach
The 15th Circuit LEN meetings and enforcement events were suspended during the COVID pandemic.  This was our first meeting in over a year held at Logan's Roadhouse in North Myrtle Beach.  Though the enforcement event was canceled, we were on hand to witness the MBPD receive several awards.
Carolina Country Music Festival
June 10-13
This year we were very happy to provide meals on Friday and Sunday of the Festival.  We prepared the meals at the Main PD on Oak street and transferred the food & supplies to the site.  Our volunteers enjoyed being transported in the paddy wagon/van taking the opportunity for photo ops.  The MBPD, MBFD and other first responders seemed to really appreciate our efforts.

Note:  we also fed all of the officers and staff in the Main PD before we went to the CCMF site.  We couldn't leave them out!

Friday, June 11 - grilled hamburgers and hotdogs
 Sunday, June 13  BBQ Sandwiches

Memorial Weekend Hospitality Centers
May 28-30

We once again held a successful extended Memorial Weekend feeding all of the law enforcement helping to keep our City safe over this eventful weekend. It was long hours for those that volunteered, but the intrinsic rewards made it worth our efforts.  We have so much and so many to be thankful for.  Local businesses and community members came through for us even though it's been a difficult year for them, and continues to be so.

Train Depot:  open Friday, Saturday, Sunday from 6:30 a.m.-midnight
Regency Towers - open around-the-clock beginning Friday morning at 6 a.m. until Monday morning around 10 a.m.
Monday morning clean-up.  After working all weekend, there is still the chore of cleaning up and taking our supplies back to the storage unit.  We finished around 4 p.m.  Another long day.
The debut of our Challenge Coin was offered at both locations

Dedication of the "Warren S. Gall Police Annex"
May 14, 2021
It was a beautiful day to honor former Chief Gall and his commitment and service to the City of Myrtle Beach.  What a fitting tribute!  Thank you to the following MBCPAAA members who represented our Association:  Tommy Chestnut, Whitney Chestnut, Mike Grehl, Tim Hyman, Bev and Franco Krzynowek, and Barbara Prescop. A tour of the facility was given following the dedication ceremony, which included a look at the new "state of the art" shooting range.

Special Guest Appearance:
Kristal Turner-Childs

The City of Myrtle Beach shared with the community, the diversity training experienced by the police department.  It felt like we were back in the CPA class which we all loved attending.  This was an interactive, personable session about awareness to ALL cultures and races.

2021 Myrtle Beach Marathon

The Myrtle Beach Marathon returned to the City this year.  The weather was perfect but the event was not as it has been in the past.  Due to COVID, no spectators were allowed at the start/finish in Pelican Stadium and there were also no vendors or after-race events.

A good number of MBCPAAA volunteers were present at the 4:30 a.m. briefing held at the main PD in Myrtle Beach.  All were given posts along the Ocean Blvd. race route.  Various members were instrumental in radioing for help when runners needed assistance, such as first aid, or rides back to the Stadium when they couldn't take one more step.

A BIG thank-you to MBCPAAA volunteers:  Rosalie Alexandersen, Whiteny Chestnut, Tommy Chestnut, Nate Davis, Larry Graden, Cookie Graga, Mike Grehl, Maria Hammond, Mike Johnston, Ellie Lirjoni, Candy Lowe, Jill Merhar, Barbara Prescop, John Rollins, Ron Siedlecki, and Karen Wierzbicki.

Real-Time Crime Maintenance Assistant Volunteers
The MBPD has asked for MBCPAAA volunteers to ride with the MBPD's Real-Time Crime Camera Technician.  OSHA and the City of Myrtle Beach require the technician, Parker Rehn, to have someone with him when using the City's bucket truck.  This is a safety issue and members of the MBCPAAA had quickly stepped-up up to accept the call.  Volunteers are needed on Tuesday, Wednesda, and Thursday of each week depending upon the availability of the truck.
Membership Meeting
Saturday, April 17, 2021
This Membership meeting was held at the Base Rec Center in the Market Common.  Our guest speakers featured Chief Amy Prock and Capt. Joey Crosby.  Chief Prock expressed her thanks and appreciation for the efforts of the MBCPAAA esp. through events following MBPD Ofc. Jacob Hancher's death through the 2020 Holiday Meals.  She and Capt. Crosby presented Certificates of Appreciation to each member present who helped with the 2020 Thanksgiving and Christmas Meals.
Capt. Crosby updated the membership on upcoming events and highlighted the upcoming Special Engagement Speaker scheduled for May 5.  He asked the MBCPAAA to help spread the word and plan to attend the event and help as needed.
Among other Association matters, the upcoming Hospitality Center was discussed with the notice and webpage being posted in the near future.

Great Partnership with the Myrtle Beach Tennis Center
Over the weekend of April 10-11, the Myrtle Beach Tennis Center along w/Bojangles donated food for our wonderful MBPD.  Through our MBCPAAA member, Jill Merhar, we have developed a partnership with the Tennis Center.  This is a great connection for showing appreciation to our local Law Enforcement.  A BIG Thank You to Myrtle Beach Tennis Center office manager Graham Howe, local tennis pro Brad Anderson, and Regional Manager of Bojangles, Mark Kiskunis.
McLeod Health/City of Myrtle Beach Mass COVID-19 1A Vaccine Clinic
Myrtle Beach Convention Center
March 30-31, 2021
The second round of vaccinations went off without a hitch.  McLeod and the City of Myrtle Beach planned a very efficient, well-organized, and smooth operation.  Once again, the MBCPAAA volunteers stepped up to answer the call.  We provided 19 volunteers over the two-day period with many volunteers working both days.  Our Golf-cart and outside wheelchair assistance staff were especially thankful to Mother Nature for providing a rain-free two days, though at times the clouds looked threatening.
A special "Thank You" to:  Tommy Chestnut, Nate Davis, Ron Farabell, Don Flickinger, Larry Graden, Cookie Graga, Mike Grehl, Glen Gunther, John Kanellos, Melissa Lindenmuth, Jill Merhar, John Moore, Caroline Paulhus, John Paulhus, Barbara Prescop, Sandy Sharp, Verena Schnyder, Ron Siedlecki, and Jim Turnbull.
A Final Good-Bye to a Dedicated MBCPAAA Member
Picture
Suddenly on Wednesday, March 10, 2021 MBCPAAA member Lee Edwards passed away.  He was a graduate of CPA Class 30 in November of 2015 and had been an active member and volunteer since joining.  He enjoyed being a role-player for the active shooter training for officers, attending membership meetings, and even participated in painting cones for the MBPD.  We will miss you, Lee.

Memorial donations can be made to American Diabetes Association, PO Box 7023, Merrifield, VA 22116-7023; Berlin Memorial United Methodist Church, 4182 Highway 17 Business, Murrells Inlet, SC 29576; The Presbyterian Church at Woodbury, 67 S. Broad Street, Woodbury, NJ 08096.

January 23, 2021
Picture
We were able to provide the MBPD with Bojangles Breakfast sandwiches (not pictured - gone already!) and lunch boxes (chicken tenders & chicken sandwiches) as well as plenty of sides.
Food was also donated on December 5, 2020.  It's so nice when people think about providing for our police officers!  Kudos to Graham and Brad from the Myrtle Beach Tennis Center and Mark Kiskunas from Bojangles.

Membership Meeting
January 9, 2021
Base Rec Center - Market Common

Our first meeting of the New Year was held at the Base Rec Center in the Market Common.  This large meeting room allowed plenty of room for social distancing.  Temperatures were taken prior to entering the room and masks were required.  We are always happy to welcome this first meeting in order to present special awards as well as thank all of our wonderful volunteers.
2020 MBCPAAA Lt. Tommy Chestnut Volunteers of the Year - It is always difficult to choose for this award since all of our volunteers are worthy.  However, these two special people are especially generous with their time and always willing to lend a hand.
Picture

Larry Graden was present to receive his plaque and Angelo's gift certificate.  He has volunteered as a "runner" to pick-up/deliver food and thank-you certificates.  Most importantly, he has made contact with Bimbo Bakeries and was able to procure many snacks for our Hospitality Center event.

(L to R) VP Meche Williams, Larry Graden, President Barbara Prescop

Picture
Mike Grehl also received the 2020 Lt. Tommy Chestnut Volunteer of the Year Award.  He also served as a "runner" picking up/delivering food and thank-you certificates.  He saved the day, several times, when we were scheduled to deliver the food bars from our storage unit but was without a trailer to do so.
2020 Exemplary Action Award - This is only the third time in the history of the MBCPAAA that this award has been presented.  As the title suggests, it is for "Exemplary" action taken by a MBPD officer or officers while demonstrating the core vales of the Myrtle Beach Police Department.
Congratulations PFC Kurt Hunter and PFC Nicholas Heard.

“In the early morning hours of December 20th members from both MBFD and MBPD responded to a reported house fire on Woodside Ave with trapped occupants. Officers Hunter and Heard arrived on the scene first and were able to successfully locate and remove one person from the burning home. The person was disabled and was trapped in the building.  Moments later, Engine 2 arrived and initiated fire attack while Truck  6 and Rescue 1 completed searches."

Christmas 2020
The meal that almost wasn't!  Thanks to COVID, some drastic measures were taken.  Along with our usual precautions (face-masks, gloves, wrapped utensils packets, sanitation measures, etc), there was NO dining in the room.  All meals were served in take-out containers so the meals could be eaten elsewhere.  Despite all inconveniences, it appeared everyone enjoyed the food.
Firehouse Subs Donates to the MBPD
1211 38th Avenue N
Dec 1, 2020

Picture
Debbie Duncan, owner of this business called to donate approx. 25 boxes of subs and chips.  Apparently someone had put an order in for the wrong day and Debbie thought of our Association and wonderful MBPD.  Thank You so much!

Thanksgiving 2020
Thanksgiving 2020 incorporated the extra safety precautions due to the COVID virus and associated restrictions.  Volunteers were limited, temperatures were taken upon arrival, masks were worn, hand sanitizer was available, gloves were provided and used for handling and dishing food, our food bars utilized the sneeze guards and food rails, individual utensils were seal wrapped w/a napkin, salt & pepper, and tables & seating were sanitized after every use.  Regardless, the officers enjoyed the Holiday Meal and all of the wonderful desserts provided.  Thank you to our wonderful volunteers and contributing businesses.
15th Circuit LEN (Law Enforcement Network)
City of Myrtle Beach
November 20, 2020
The first 15th Circuit Law Enforcement Traffic Safety Event of 2020 was held in our own City of Myrtle Beach.  The 15th Circuit is made up of Law Enforcement Agencies within multiple jurisdiction in Horry County.  Damon's Grill hosted the briefing and meeting prior to the event held at Rt 501 between Seaboard Street and Grissom Parkway.  It was a very productive night w/a "no tolerance policy" resulting in 12 arrests and approx. 45 citations.
Among other awards given during the meeting, the MBCPAAA received a beautiful placque thanking us for supporting the 15th Circuit and these LEN events.  The MBCPAAA has been providing refreshments and snacks for every event since August of 2016.
Jacob Hancher Criminal Justice Scholarship Fund Fundraiser
Picture
The scholarship is specifically for a child of a police officer going into law enforcement and studying criminal justice.  First preference to the son/daughter of an MBPD officer.

The fundraiser was a raffle for a custom-built AR-15, sponsored by Wayne Jones of 1-800-BOARDUP.  Echo 6 Weapons in Aynor customized the weapon to include Blackhound optics, a painted Thin Blue Line along the length of the rifle, and numerous other modifications

Tickets were $20 each.  John Rollins was our top seller with 50 tickets and $1000 toward the scholarship.  The MBCPAAA sold approx. $2700 worth of tickets toward the Grand Total of $8000 raised!  Great Job.

On December 1, 2020, Lt. Thomas Wiggins of the City of Whiteville, NC Police Department was the lucky winner.

Membership Meeting
November 7, 2020
The Meeting was held in the Base Recreation Center in the Market Common to allow for plenty of social distancing and featured two special presentations.  Following the presentations and cake, regular business was conducted including announcing the 2021 election results.  Maria Hammond, Barbara Prescop, Crystal Rautzhan, John Rollins, and Meche Williams were elected to remain on the Board of Directors for another two years!  Congratulations.

Chief Amy Prock and Assistant Chief Marty Brown were on hand to present Lt. Tommy Chestnut, retired with a shadow box.  This box is a historical representation of Tommy's 40 years with the MBPD.
Our second presentation featured Wayne Jones, a Horry County career firefighter and Victim Services Director for 1-800-BOARDUP.

He organized the Jacob Hancher Scholarship to be awarded specifically to a child of a police officer going into law enforcement and studying criminal justice.  Applicants for the scholarship will be limited to
any Law Enforcement jurisdiction in Horry County, SC with first preference to the son/daughter of an MBPD officer.  Wayne explained how the raffle prize was chosen and the precautions taken, esp. for the winner of the raffle.  Once all questions were answered, a presentation on 1-800-BOARDUP followed.  This company helps victims of fire, water, and storm damage offering a multitude of services.  The company also helps with fundraisers benefiting such causes as Angel of Hope, Bells Across America, and Firefighter Cancer Prevention, to name a few.
Coastal Carolina Shields
November 3, 2020
MBCPAAA President Barbara Prescop was invited to speak at the Coastal Carolina Shields meeting. This meeting was dedicated to Ofc. Jacob Hancher. With the help of MBCPAAA member and CCS member, Mike Grehl, the Organization offered a donation to the MBCPAAA of $500 toward the Jacob Hancher Funeral Reception. Since the public reception was canceled, the CCS donation was added to their Hancher Family donation, however, Barbara thanked the Organization for their generous offer. She then presented a framed Certificate of Appreciation to Chick-fil-A, 1613 Church Street, Conway for their generous donation to the MBPD following the Hancher Funeral. Accepting the certificate was Ed Gavin standing in for Paul Alverson, owner of the Chick-fil-A at the Conway location. In addition, information was shared about the AR-15 raffle with proceeds to benefit the Jacob Hancher Scholarship fund. This fund will be awarded to a local student(s) majoring in criminal justice. Lastly, Barbara shared information on the "High Speed" Book Drive, with all new/gently used books donated in the memory of Ofc Jacob "High Speed" Hancer to local libraries.
2020 Myrtle Beach Mini-Marathon
October 18, 2020
Due to Covid 19, this is one of the few events held in the City this year.  We had twelve MBCPAAA volunteers spread out among many posts along the route of the marathon, with a few posts doubling up with volunteers.  Lt. Tommy Chestnut, retired, volunteered and was given a MBPD golf cart to use as he checked on our volunteers.  As luck would have it, the golf cart died around 32nd Ave N and he was briefly stranded.  Just a little comical bump in the road.  Along w/Tommy, we thank Rosalie Alexandersen, Whitney Chestnut, Larry Graden, Glen Gunther, Maria Hammond, Jill Merhar, Renee Miller, John Moore, Barbara Prescop, Pam Rochelle, and John Rollins for volunteering and setting their alarm clocks for a 5:30 a.m. briefing.  Once again, a thank you to the race organizers for providing t-shirts & gator masks to our volunteers and police officers.
MBPD Officer Jacob Hancher

This tragic in-the-line-of-duty death affected the entire Myrtle Beach Community and beyond.  There were many memorials held throughout the week where members of the MBCPAAA showed their support.  The Association arranged food and refreshment for the MBPD following the public funeral.  Though we appreciate the many businesses offering free or discounted food, we are indebted to the following businesses in providing for our MBPD:
  • Pepsi Bottling Ventures - 2380 US 501, Conway, 29526; 25 cases of water & 10 cases of soda
  • Bojangles - Mark Kiskunas; 819 Coggin Court, Myrtle Beach, 29579; 125 bbq sandwiches, sweet tea + extra items
  • Chick-fil-A  - Paul Alverson; 1613 Church Street, Conway, 29526; 125 chicken sandwiches + extra items

These photos are a summary of the events held throughout the week.

Labor Day Weekend Hospitality Centers - Sept 3-6, 2020
Picture
Due to COVID, the Atlantic Bike Fest (aka Black Bike Week) was initially moved from Memorial Weekend to Labor Day Weekend, thus we moved our Hospitality Center Event to Labor Day Weekend.  As the weekend approached, Chief Prock asked if we would be willing to feed ALL Law Enforcement projected to be working in our City that weekend.  The Train Depot was reserved for our use in order to provide a safe place for Law Enforcement while assuring safety precautions were in place.  Masks were required, disposable gloves utilized at the food bars, pre-wrapped utensils which included napkin, salt and pepper, seating spaced sufficiently, food bars had safety glass in place, and sanitation of tables and chairs followed every use.  In addition, the Regency Towers still served snacks, homemade goodies, plenty of cold drinks, some finger food (pizza & fried chicken), and a place for Law Enforcement to take a break.
Again due to COVID, our total number of volunteers was greatly reduced.  Those volunteers who did help worked extremely hard, putting in many long hours on little sleep to assure this event a success.  We can not express our appreciation enough to these dedicated individuals.
Another challenge was obtaining donations from local businesses.  Most of the businesses were hit hard due to the shut-down and restrictions placed upon them.  Our Association was fortunate to receive a SBA Grant for Non-Profits which allowed us to offer money to the businesses that have been helping us for years.  Though we tried to insist, not surprisingly, some businesses refused the offer and donated more for our event.  This is our community!  Thank You.

2020 Memorial Weekend
The Atlantic Beach Bike Fest (Black Bike Week) was rescheduled for the Fall of 2020.  However, due to the Holiday Weekend, safety measures were still incorporated within the city calling for additional Law Enforcement to help keep our City safe.  Though our hospitality center was canceled, the MBCPAAA still provided lunches each day for our Heroes in Blue.  Thanks to three extremely supportive local businesses, were were able to deliver the boxed lunches to all Law Enforcement posted on the Boulevard as well as to the Command Center with enough left over to bring to the PD Station.

2019 Law Enforcement Hospitality Center - May 24-27
at the Regency Towers
This Annual event featured our new Hot Food Bar, purchased by the City of Myrtle Beach to help in our endeavor to feed hundreds of Law Enforcement Personnel, First Responders, and City Workers.  This piece of professional equipment made a huge difference in keeping the food warm & fresh and the room temperature at a more bearable level.
In addition, we were the official caterer for the Command Center providing food for those stationed in that building.  With more people to feed, we needed more donations and our business partners came through (list can be found in the photo gallery).
The Regency Towers management and staff were super hospitable and donated over $200 worth of supplies.  Of course this would never be a success without our hardworking and devoted volunteers.  Their dedication is unparalleled.  In addition to our member and community volunteers, our Neighborhood Walmart provided volunteers and supplies.  Their participation provided a $2000 grant to our Association - $1000 from the Walmart Organization and $1000 from our Neighborhood Walmart @ 1705 S Kings Hwy.  Thank You!

Membership Meeting and Real-Time Crime Unit Presentation

This Spring Membership meeting was well attended and proved a captive audience for Bill Gregg, Real-Time Crime Unit employee of the MBPD.  Bill provided examples to how the technology helps deter crime and help officers and citizens in need.
The Real Time Crime Unit (RTC) is assigned to the Support Services Division of the Myrtle Beach Police Department. It is a centralized technology center in which its' principal purpose is to provide officers instant and comprehensive information to help find suspects, vehicles, identify patterns, and stop emerging crime. The RTC Unit is focused on monitoring, deterring, and evaluating criminal activity in real-time through the use of surveillance cameras, fixed and mobile license plate recognition (LPR) systems, crime analysis and other law enforcement software and databases. Carolina Country Music Festival - June 7-10, 2018
This is the first time since the CCMF has been in Myrtle Beach that the MBCPAAA has been asked to assist.  Unfortunately due to the late request and not having been needed previously, some of our members had already volunteered w/the sponsors.  However, we did have some very dedicated members step up to the plate to cover all eleven shifts, most working more than one day.  Thanks to:  Dennis Brogna, Jack and Sandy Cheape, Don Flickinger, Larry Graden, Cookie Graga, Mike Johnston, Leon LeClerc, Barbara Prescop, Eric Rice, and John Rollins.

A BIG thank you is extended to all who made this event a success.  Every morsel of food and every minute volunteered made this event a HUGE success and put the Regency Towers Law Enforcement Hospitality Center on the map!

Wings Over Myrtle Beach Air Show - April 28-29, 2018
Our Association was asked to provide volunteers to help the MBPD w/traffic and pedestrian control during this event.  Volunteers were given several posts to manage throughout the Market Common area.  This is one event where it seemed the volunteers had more responsibility than in other volunteer opportunities.  Our MBPD Liaison, Lt. Tommy Chestnut, worked elbow to elbow with us and managed to motor around on his golf cart checking on the welfare of our volunteers.  Sunday lunch was a welcomed treat and was provided by Damon's Grill in Myrtle Beach.  They provided a dozen nutritious boxed lunches which was thoroughly appreciated.  Our shifts were long, but enjoyable, we had a great view of most of the show, and we savored the opportunity to bond with our fellow volunteers.  Susan Grose arrived in her golf  and was able to motor around and provide us with much needed breaks.  We look forward to the 2019 Air Show.
April 21, 2018 - Membership Meeting & FBI Presentation
Our well attended April Membership Meeting featured a presentation from FBI Special Agent Tim Quigley.  He described his background and some of the many financial fraud cases he has worked in and out of Myrtle Beach and the State of South Carolina.  Following his presentation, there was a question/answer period where SA Quigley addressed such topics as what it takes to become a Special Agent, the FBI Citizens Academy, and the types of cases to which the local FBI office becomes involved.  Barbara Prescop, MBCPAAA President, presented SA Quigley with a Certificate of Appreciation and the Ultimate Myrtle Beach Discount Card in appreciation for taking time out of his Saturday to be our guest speaker.
March 28-29, 2018-Role Playing for SLED/FBI Bomb Training
Our Association was asked to provide volunteer role players for this first ever training in Myrtle Beach.  We had over 32 volunteers participate the two-day training.  Day one included a morning orientation and demonstration with role playing in the afternoon.  Day two continued w/the role playing scenarios in the morning with a huge culminating event in the afternoon session.  Role players enacted people in various locations needing to be safely found and bought to safety, however, booby trap explosives were placed throughout the area.  The bombs/booby trap explosive devices had to be found, inspected, deactivated, and safely removed.  The culminating event included active shooter scenarios with eleven booby trapped "hostages,"each attached to an explosive device.  All of the volunteers seemed to have fun while becoming educated in the different types of explosives and the meticulous process SLED and the bomb technicians employ.
A BIG thank you to the Golden Corral on Seaboard street in Myrtle Beach for offering $10 lunches (included drink & tip) to all participants.
WMBF aired two segments on the training, both of which can be viewed on our Media Page.

Myrtle Beach Marathon - March 3, 2018
The Annual Myrtle Beach Marathon involves a tremendous amount of logistical planning.  If not for the Myrtle Beach Police Department, the event would not be a success.  Our volunteers joined the 5 a.m. MBPD briefing @ the Courthouse off Oak Street and Mr. Joe White Boulevard.  The MBCPAAA provided volunteers to help w/pedestrian and traffic control and to cheer and direct the participants.  Jack and Sandy Cheape worked their first marathon, alongside Larry Graden, Leon LeClerc, John Moore, Barbara Prescop, and Pam Rochelle. Thank you volunteers for setting your alarms so early and committing to "Support the MBPD."
15th Circuit LEN, February 23, 2018 - Georgetown, SC
The MBCPAAA "Incident Support Canteen" supported the Law Enforcement personnel @ the Traffic Safety Stop in Georgetown, SC.  Whenever a good number of MBPD officers plan to participate, the canteen will travel! On this night, Mike Diehl, Susan Gross, and Barbara Prescop operated the Canteen.  The night was full of surprises, including the police chase to catch a "runner" who plowed through the cones and took off, headed for the bridge.  He ditched his car and a search ensued.
